We offer students to write a Bachelor or a Master Thesis at our chair. In order to be able to write a Bachelor Thesis with us you have to be allocated to our chair by the official faculty-wide allocation scheme.
If you are allocated to us for a Bachelor thesis or you want to write a Master thesis with us, please, at first, make an appointment with Prof. Lehmann-Hasmeyer to talk about possible topics and the further procedure.

Bachelor
The Industrial Revolution and the Roots of Modern Growth

Content:
This course is an introduction to the origins of modern economic growth and aims to address the following questions: What are the reasons why some countries are rich while others are poor? What led to the Industrial Revolution in eighteenth-century Britain and not in other parts of Europe or Asia? Why were some countries successful in industrializing while others were not? What explains the divergence and convergence of nations? We will examine these issues from both a theoretical and historical perspective. This syllabus is subject to change (updated on September 9, 2025).
Time: Winter Term
Lecture: 13 sessions in total on Wednesdays and Fridays starting on October 15, 2025, in HS 36 and HS 20, respectively (see below for exact dates). There is no lecture on October 31 and November 14. Relevant slides will be posted via Ilias.
Exercise: The exercise sessions will be held as a block seminar on January 9, 2026, from 9-18h in HS 7, respectively. Student presentations will be held during these two sessions.

Inhalt: Regelmäßig wechselnde Oberthemen zu den Forschungsgebieten des Lehrstuhls und zu aktuellen Themen der wirtschaftshistorischen Forschung. Die Themen des aktuellen Semesters entnehmen sie bitte der Syllabus. Die Anmeldung zum Seminar erfolgt wie bei allen Leistungen über Studium Online.
Das Seminar History of Economic Thought bietet einen systematischen Überblick über die Entwicklung des ökonomischen Denkens von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie wirtschaftliche Ordnungen und Marktmechanismen historisch begründet, moralisch legitimiert und theoretisch erklärt wurden – und wie sich diese Deutungen im Wandel politischer, sozialer und kultureller Kontexte verändert haben. Ziel des Seminars ist es, zentrale ökonomische Konzepte – etwa Eigentum, Preis, Nutzen oder Markt – in ihren ursprünglichen philosophischen, institutionellen und historischen Zusammenhängen zu analysieren. Die Teilnehmenden sollen lernen, wirtschaftstheoretische Positionen nicht nur systematisch zu rekonstruieren, sondern auch in Bezug auf heutige wirtschaftsethische Debatten kritisch zu reflektieren

Master
Type: Seminar (Seminar paper+presentation)
Content:
Inclusive Finance in History: Savings Banks, Workers’ Precaution, and Development This Master seminar explores saving as an economic, social, and cultural practice since 1800. We discuss household motives and expectations, the rise of savings banks, workers’ precaution and social insurance, links to industrialization and regional development, as well as crises, war, gender, and propaganda.
Format: literature-based with brief active elements and qualitative case studies.
Schedule: kick-off (Topic 1) October, 23, then two block session in January (15 and 16.).
Assessment: one 40-minute presentation (25’ talk + 15’ Q&A) and one seminar paper (18–25 pages), due March 1, 2026.
Working language: English.

This course provides an introduction to the history of the international economy over the past two centuries, and asks: What were the political and technological underpinnings of increased trade, capital and labour flows during the period; what were the effects of these flows on income distribution within countries; and what political responses did they provoke? What can explain the deglobalisation experienced in the years between 1914 and 1945? What, if any, were the connections between globalization and convergence? Between globalization and growth?

Typ: Vorlesung mit Übung
Inhalt:
Diese Vorlesung/Übung gibt einen Überblick über die zentralen Themen der quantitativen Unternehmensgeschichte im Allgemeinen und ausgewählter Archivquellen zu verschiedenen Unternehmensbereichen im Besonderen. Die Vorlesung beschäftigt sich in einem kurzen theoretischen Teil mit der Bedeutung der quantitativen Unternehmensgeschichte sowie dem Sinn der Unternehmensgeschichte für die Unternehmen und die historische Forschung. Der Fokus der Vorlesung liegt auf der Analyse von ausgewählten Quellen zur Unternehmensgeschichte. Dazu lernen die Studierenden verschiedene Archive in Exkursionen kennen. Die Vorlesung findet wöchentlich statt. Jeder Studierende stellt im Rahmen des Seminars eine unternehmenshistorische Quelle vor und schreibt eine kurze Beschreibung dieser Quelle, die den anderen Studierenden bereitgestellt wird.

Art: Vorlesung mit Übung (4 SWS, 6 ETCS)
Inhalt:
Nach wie vor sind die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus und unser Umgang mit ihr allgegenwärtig und einer der prägendsten historischen Referenzpunkte des öffentlichen Diskurses. In dieser Veranstaltung werden wir den Nationalsozialismus aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchten. Dabei stehen sowohl Biographien einzelner zeitgenössischer Akteure wie auch strukturelle Rahmenbedingungen im Fokus. Gemeinsam werden wir untersuchen, wie diese verschiedenen Ansätze unser Verständnis der NS-Zeit prägen und welche Erkenntnisse sie uns ermöglichen.
Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt wird auf der Geschichtsvermittlung liegen. Wie können wir das komplexe und sensible Thema des Nationalsozialismus didaktisch sinnvoll aufbereiten und in der schulischen wie außerschulischen Bildungsarbeit weitergeben?
Praktische Quellenübungen runden die Veranstaltung ab und bieten Gelegenheit, historische Dokumente zu analysieren, ein Gefühl für die Arbeit mit unterschiedlichen Primärquellen zu entwickeln und unsere Fähigkeit zu schärfen, kritisch und reflektiert mit historischen Inhalten umzugehen.
